Building Physical Literacy: 4-Week Basketball Learning Series for Your Child

By Raisa Riddhi, Community Health Leader

Physical literacy is the ability, confidence, motivation, and understanding to engage in physical activities throughout one’s life. It is an important building block that supports children in being active and can be developed in kids and teens by establishing an early foundation, ensuring they get enough physical activity each day, and teaching fundamental movement skills, such as balance, running, jumping, and throwing. Physical literacy includes a range of skills, such as motor skills, movement knowledge, physical fitness, and cognitive skills. It also helps children develop social skills, improve mental well-being, and reduce the risk of obesity.

Healthy St. Pete is thrilled to continue the Learn to Play Series with Basketball in March! Throughout the four weeks, participants will embark on a journey of motor coordination, flexibility, and endurance. Basketball also encourages speed, agility, and strength. These skills have a positive effect on promoting healthy body weight and encouraging more physical activity, which can enhance cardiorespiratory fitness and self-esteem. Being able to catch, jump, run, or throw are just a few examples of physical literacy in basketball.

Basketball is an excellent way to get in shape and stay active. Children will learn to move their bodies in different ways as they jump, pivot, and twist. Plus, they’ll have the opportunity to connect with other youth and practice being good teammates as basketball requires teamwork. It can help children learn how to strive for a common goal, learn important communication skills, and cooperate with teammates. Playing basketball can help children make new friends, build self-confidence, and promote self-esteem.

Give your child the opportunity to develop essential skills, stay active, and have fun with our exciting 4-week basketball learning series. Our experienced coaches ensure that every participant receives personalized attention, making it the perfect opportunity for growth and enjoyment. Enroll your children in this fun and exciting series whether they are beginners or have little experience!
