Mental Health Matters: What To Do When You’re Feeling Overwhelmed
By Rhenelle Mc Sween-Navarro, Community Health Specialist
Feeling overwhelmed is a common experience that many of us encounter at various points in our lives. Whether it’s due to work, school, relationships, or other life challenges, the sensation of being overwhelmed can be incredibly stressful. However, it’s essential to remember that there are strategies you can employ to help alleviate these feelings and regain a sense of control. Here are some tips on what to do when you’re feeling overwhelmed:
Take a Step Back
When you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s so easy to get caught up in the chaos of the moment. Take a step back and try to gain some perspective on the situation. Ask yourself what is causing you to feel overwhelmed and whether there are any specific triggers that you can identify.
Break it Down
Break down the tasks or responsibilities that are contributing to your feelings into smaller, more manageable steps. This ca help make the situation feel less daunting and allow you to tackle one thing at a time.
Prioritize
Once you’ve broken down your tasks, prioritize them based on urgency and importance. Focus on completing the most critical tasks first and then move on to the less urgent ones. This can help you regain a sense of control and prevent you from feeling overwhelmed by trying to do everything at once.
Delegate
Don’t be afraid to ask for help or delegate tasks to others if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Whether it’s asking a coworker to assist with a project or enlisting the help of a friend or family member, sharing the load can help lighten the burden and reduce your stress levels.
Take Breaks
It’s essential to take breaks when you’re feeling overwhelmed to give yourself time to recharge and reset. Step away from the situation for a few minutes, take a walk, practice deep breathing exercises, or engage in activities that help you relax and unwind.
Practice Self-Care
Self-care is crucial when you’re feeling overwhelmed. Make sure you’re taking care of your physical and emotional well-being by eating healthily, getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, and engaging in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment.
Seek Support
If you’re feeling overwhelmed for an extended period or if your feelings are significantly impacting your daily life, don’t hesitate to seek support from a trusted friend, family member, or mental health professional. Talking to someone can provide you with additional perspective and coping strategies to help you navigate through difficult times.
Remember, feeling overwhelmed is a normal part of life, and it’s okay to ask for help when you need it. By implementing these strategies and taking proactive steps to manage your stress, you can overcome overwhelming feelings and regain a sense of balance and control in your life.
