Free Resources at School-Based Health Clinics
By: Brandon McIntosh, Health Educator, Florida Department of Health – Pinellas
As a Health Educator for the School-Based Health Centers through the Department of Health in Pinellas County, I educate students about health and nutrition while working to promote healthy behaviors. My work also joins key stakeholders in working towards addressing the concerns of youth in Pinellas County. The School-Based Health Centers work to address barriers for students and families in Pinellas County.
The goal of the School-Based Health Center program is to assess, protect and promote the health of students, helping to assure they are healthy in the classroom and ready to learn. The program works closely with our clinic team in our 5 schools (Boca Ciega, Gibbs, Northeast, Pinellas Park, and Largo High school) to provide medical services to include: school/ sport physicals, mental health counseling, care of minor illnesses and injuries, and can administer over the counter medications with consent from parent/legal guardian.
During the summer months we provide school/ sport physicals and immunizations to Kindergarten through 12th grade students in Pinellas County at no cost. Through partnerships with Preserve Vision and the Health Department Dental team students are able to take advantage of vision and dental services.
